Our Mission

The Democratic Movement for the Liberation of Eritrean Kunama (DMLEK) is dedicated to advocating for the rights of the Kunama people and all marginalized nations and nationalities in Eritrea.

Founded on April 1, 1995, we work tirelessly to preserve our cultural heritage, promote democratic values, and ensure the voice of our people is heard on the world stage. Through peaceful means, education, and international advocacy, we strive for a future where all Eritreans can live in freedom and dignity.

Our organization operates across multiple continents, connecting the Kunama diaspora with their homeland and providing a platform for collective action and cultural preservation.

The Kunama People

The Kunama are an ethnic group indigenous to the Gash-Barka region of Eritrea and the adjacent Tigray region of Ethiopia. With a population of approximately 100,000 people, the Kunama have a rich cultural heritage that spans thousands of years.

The Kunama language belongs to the Nilo-Saharan language family and is distinct from the Semitic and Cushitic languages spoken by neighboring peoples. Our people have traditionally practiced agriculture and animal husbandry in the fertile lowlands of western Eritrea.

Today, many Kunama live in diaspora communities around the world, maintaining their cultural traditions while working for the rights of those who remain in their homeland.
